Inside IFP: A Coffee With… Sam

Welcome to Inside IFP, the series where I sit down for a coffee with different members of the team and chat all about their journey so far. This week, I had the pleasure of getting to know Sam a bit better. Sam is our Head of Resources, but that isn’t where her story begins. She’s spent 11 years putting in the work and building her career. Grab yourself a cuppa – this one’s a great read.

Sam, we all know you as our Head of Resources, but what does that look like day-to-day for you?

I have a hybrid role that covers Operations and HR. Therefore, every day looks different depending on what issues or work arises. I could be putting together offer letters or employment contracts for new recruits, working on payroll, arranging services/work on office equipment, or liaising with product/service providers.

Your role must come with its challenges – do you ever find it difficult?

Leading our HR function, there are obviously times where you must have difficult and upsetting conversations with individuals – this is especially hard when you have built relationships with individuals over time. But it’s my job to follow internal and regulatory processes, as well as providing an unbiased view on situations and support individuals in a fair way.

Challenges aside, what is your favourite thing about being Head of Resources?

I like that my job is so varied, as I said, every day looks different, but it brings me great pride in making sure we have a functional and happy work environment for our staff to do and enjoy their job.

You’ve been at IFP for quite a while now! How has your career evolved since you started in 2015?

I’ve had 6 job titles in my 11 years at IFP. Starting off as an administrator, to now being Head of. Whilst this hasn’t happened overnight and with maternity leave in between, I have been supported to gain new knowledge, qualifications and expertise – being recognised for my work and given the opportunity to progress within the company.

You’ve done a lot of work on our benefits package to make it truly bespoke. But what is your personal favourite staff benefit?

I am super proud of all the benefits we offer staff and love that I am involved in this decision making but ultimately, the flexibility to manage my own working hours and what days I work from home really helps manage my home life balance – especially being a mum – and that is so valuable.

We’re currently recruiting and expanding our team. In your time here you must have seen a lot of success stories. What kind of person do you think thrives at IFP?

Someone ambitious who wants to become an expert in their chosen vocation, is innovative and wants to excel.

Thank you for your insights, Sam! But, before we can finish, I’ve got to ask you my quick-fire questions! So…

Describe IFP in 3 words or less.

Fun, flexible and challenging – in a good way!

Tea or coffee?

Coffee, always.

Office or remote?

Whilst WFH has it’s perks, office.

Early start or late finish?

Early start – if I can get out of bed!

Quick or long lunch?

Quick lunch.

And finally, smart or casual style?

I like dressing up, so smarter for me.

It was great to sit down with Sam and hear about her journey – from starting as an administrator to becoming Head of Resources.

Her story is a brilliant example of how careers can grow at IFP with the right support and mindset. If you’re looking to join our team, take a look at our careers page for our current vacancies!

See you next time, with another coffee and another conversation.
